Discovering Composition

The course you have just entered is the study of composition.  Compology is focused on the students’ discovery of their writing process. You will learn that this process varies for each person.  Perhaps, for you, it is rooted in something Audre Lorde calls “difference,” or perhaps something Langston Hughes described as a “power” one possesses when one is not just captivated by language, but when one also beholds what the human race has collectively accomplished with language.  You are not required to fall in love with writing.  Neither are you required to become something or someone other than who and what you are today. You are, however, required to see yourself for who you are, what you have done, and how you have become—and to put that to paper.  You are to do that well, that is according to certain standards put forth by myself, centuries of institutions of higher learning, and last but certainly not least—by you. You, after all, are your own composition.

Welcome to the world of yourself.
